12/21/2004, Christmas concert at school

The music club at school put on a nice Christmas concert at lunch time.  They just did it in a big open space in the afternoon, unlike the more school concerts we do back in Seattle.

thumbnailNotice how a student conducts the group.  Interesting, I think.  Students take turns conducting, I guess.
thumbnailThere were a few horns in the back, but it was mostly stringed instruments, especially violins.
thumbnailThis student is just announcing the next song.  Notice the Santa costume with a red mini skirt.

I had lots of free time to kick around the staff room.

thumbnailMr. Takei is starting to grow a beard.  Some school administrators in Japan don't like the beards.  I told him in the United States, a beard is a symbol of scholarly wisdom.  I told him if he just took off his suit jacket and replaced it with a sweater, he'd look like a college professor.  So, he came back with a sweater.  I took this picture for my fried Matt, and English teacher, who is growing a beard and just slightly worried about the reaction of his co-workers.
thumbnailAlso had some tasty sweets.  Strawberry cream inside.  White chocolate outside.  All rolled in fine confectioner's sugar (not powdered sugar).
thumbnailYeah, it really was tasty.
