8/7/2005, Making tempura with Akemi's mom, playing with her 5 year old nephew

We spent the day over at her parents' house.  The primary purpose of the visit was for me to try making tempura.  The plan was for her mom to show me how.  It takes a little bit of technique.  Also, although you can do it in an ordinary pot, it really helps to have a special deep fryer made for the purpose.  But, we also spent some time with her 5 year old newphew, Koki.  Koki is spending part of the summer with grandma and grandpa so his older brother can concentrate on his studies without being pestered.  Poor kid.  Akemi and I both feel a little sorry for him, being shipped and stored along way away from home (Yokohama) just to keep him out of his brother's hair.  But, he's having fun.  Akemi and I played took him to the park, ran him around, carried him around like a football, tossed him, twirled him, and basically got him all tired out.  I think Koki had a really good time, as did we.  Sorry, not pictures of Koki.  I was too busy running around the park to think of pulling out my camera.  Just one picture of the tempura we made.

thumbnailHomemade tempura.  Squid, shrimp, squash, an okra-like pepper, onions, and my favorite, scallops.
