3/31/2006, Visiting grad schools trip: departure

Right now, I've got 5 offers from graduate schools: University of Colorado at Boulder, Virginia Tech, Purdue, Stony Brook, and the University of Michigan.  All but the University of Michigan come complete with full funding (tuition waiver, livable monthly stipend, and health insurance).  My task is to decide which one to enroll in.  The goal is to find a place with people I want to work with, projects I find exciting, a nice campus, and a nice area that will make Akemi and me comfortable.

Today, I left Japan for this trip.  Akemi accompanied me to the airport.  Fortunately, my plane was 6 hours late, so we had plenty of time to sit and talk.  With the decision about our future (to marry and move to the United States together OR to split up) hanging over our heads, it has been a tense time.  This was perfect.

After a very long flight, via Detroit, I landed in New York and made my way to my friend Roland's apartment in upper Manhattan in the middle of an area dominated by people from the Dominican Republic.  It was great to see him.
