6/23/2005, Passing rice paddies, one of my favorite sights in Japan

(Note: "rice paddy"="rice field".)

When I visited Japan in 2003, I rode the trains all over Japan.  I rode the trains a lot.  That trip was from 5/28/03 to 6/19/03.  The rice plants had been planted and had grown a little, but weren't bushy yet.  They were just single stems sticking up.  There was some rain, so the paddies were full of water.  (This is normal.) The sun would hit the water in the paddies and reflect.  It was beautiful.  Even more beautiful was when my train passed a rice paddy.  There was a beautiful visual effect with the stems of the rice paddies blocking part of the reflection of light.  The part right in front of me was shiny.  Just to the side was less shiny because of the way the rows of rice plants lined up or didn't line up.  Anyway, all month, I've been wanting to try to take pictures or something to capture this beautiful sight for my web site.

Well, I've made some attempts.  Honestly, I don't think any of these really get it, but maybe they're better than nothing.  I made some videos with my digital camera.  Honestly, they're not that good.  I decided to post them anyway, but if you do decide to download and watch one, don't expect much.  I'm posting this for my own memory as much as anything.  But, this sight of the rice fields has been one of the most memorable parts of the scenery here in Japan for me.  I looked forward to this season coming.  And, I'll miss it in another week or so when the rice plants are grown up and I can't see it anymore.

movieShort video of a rice paddy near my school.  This is probably the best of them.  (1.3 MB, QuickTime MOV, 6 seconds)
movieSame rice paddy.  Would have been good, but it's pretty shakey. (1.5 MB, QuickTime MOV)
movieActually, I took this video a few days ago on 6/20/05 on the way back from Nagoya.  Not very good, but maybe you can imagine. (2.51 MB, QuickTime MOV)
movieSame train, same day.  It's frustrating that I can't get this to show up right. (9.9 MB, QuickTime MOV)
