3/30/2005, China trip day 7: Yangtze River boat trip day 1, stop in Fengdu

The first real day of the boat trip was great.  There's not a lot of story to tell here, but definitley some pretty pictures.  We spent the vast majority of the time just sitting on our bunk beds staring out the window at the beautiful scenery.  Here are the photos.

thumbnailAfter some cruising, we stopped briefly in a town called Fengdu.  These apartments will be submerged in water as a result of the Three Gorges Dam, which is currently being built, but well under way.
thumbnailThese are definitely poor people who will be displaced.  I'm told about 1.9 million people will lose their homes due to this horrible dam.

Here is more information from Wikipedia about the dam project.

thumbnailThis looks like a hazardous job to me.  But, China is full of hazardous jobs.  Nothing new there.

thumbnailAfter lots of staring at pretty coast land, I decided to study Japanese kanji (characters) for a change of pass.  Imagine taking a break from relaxation to study.  You know you're on a vacation when you stop resting to study.  It was a nice break.  Maybe 2 hours of studying that day.
thumbnailWe passed a city.
thumbnailThe city had some weird structure on the river bank.  I'm not sure what it is.
thumbnailThis was our breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the whole time we were on the boat.  Peanut butter, jelly, white bread rolls, apples, sunflower seeds, peanuts, pomolo (a kind of fruit like a giant grapefruit), and water.
